LEE JEANS "THE CITY IS MINE"

Sometimes late last year I was approached by the good guys from Streething which runs web-based news that covers daily dosage of urban culture and everything in between to be part of Lee Jeans latest campaign called "The City Is Mine" as featured rider for their latest cycling friendly denims.

Shot and edited by Jules from Streething, the video featured both The Killer Gerbil and the fixed gear culture in Singapore and more. Check it out!

This season, Lee Jeans has expanded their repertoire to include a clothing line geared towards cycling in the city. Dubbed 'Urban Riders', the classic cowboy jeans company moves from horses to bicycles, and with that the focus is on functionality geared towards cyclists rather than the all out ruggedness expected from a pair of denim pants back in the day. The garments feature waterproof zippers, reflective inseams, pockets for mobile phones as well as numerous other touches that move at the pace of the modern day rider.

For their 'The City is Mine' campaign, we caught up with Singaporean visual artist Luthfi Mustafah aka The Killer Gerbil to talk about cycling. While many will know KGB for signature rodent cartoon character, not all who've followed his work throughout the years will know about his interest in fixed gear cycling that started a few years back.

In this video, KGB talks about taking a break from art to work at Lifecycle, a lifestyle bicycle shop. He also talks about his progression in riding preference, as we were all noobs once, so it's nice to hear about that. Then finally, he takes us to his favourite spot to cycle in Singapore. Sometimes few months back Santa Monica Museum of Arts held their annual "Cause For Creativity: Tour da Arts" cultural festival where they invited the masses to participate in the museum's first "Bicycle Critter Art" contest. Participant was asked to create a black and white illustration of an animal riding a bicycle to represent the spirit of the event.

Submissions then were chosen by judges panel of artists and art professionals and The Killer Gerbil's Air Keirin made it through. Chosen artworks were then showcased and later printed as a whole to be given out to the public.

Over the weekend Converse held an event at Tangs Playlab to launch its latest offerings while showcasing local talents sneaker customizers Hypethetic, illustrator Sheryo and including yours truly and many other activities for the invited.

Some lucky people get to walk away with Converse vouchers over some art they created while at the event and one lucky dude even got away with a one-off collaborative custom done by the three artists!

Local hero and mr nice guy K.I.L.A.S. (Keep It Like A Secret) just had his solo show last week called "Handmade" over at dbl O Artspace featuring collab illustrations with local talents namely 1.2Delta, Antz, Clog02, Scope, Sheryo, Speak Cryptic, Zero and yours truly.

There were live screen-printing on tshirts on the opening night by the man himself with original artworks, screen-print posters and tshirts available on sale.

GRAFA TRIP

Of late I've been taking some time off of things enjoying my day to day doing what I love helping running a super chill local cycling and lifestyle boutique Life Cycle which also serves as yet another platform to connect with a wider range of like-minded individuals locally and abroad.

Last weekend we headed up to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for a night stay to meet up with some new found friends to catch up and get together. We were greeted by a young and talented designer/filmmaker/photographer Faz Adhili whom brought us around doing that touristy foodie shit before finding ourselves at Grafa, the new cool spot for all that cycling and design needs run by 3 humble creatives and crew.

I of course took the chance to leave some love around the neighborhood and a quick mural for Faz's studio before heading back to the mainland.

A huge thanks to our Malaysian connection (Faz Adhili Creative Lab, Grafa, Wheel Love) for their hospitality, time and wall space. We can't wait for more in the near future!

While cycling helps your sexy shape up, you know fixed gear is the new sexy when the boys bike-porning over classic vintages online or bike checking on the next rider at traffic stops.

Come this Friday June 17th will witness Singapore's very first goldsprint race that will be happening at Life Cycle store brought to you by the good people from Airwalk, Fab's Cycle, PEONFX and yours truly.

Goldsprint is a bicycle rollers racing and social event where riders compete each other on stationary bikes connected to a system that measures distance and riders' progress. The most common format is a qualifying round and then a series of knockout rounds until the category winners are established.

"Ro-Roll-Kidul" is the first to many future goldsprint races so do come down for an exhilarating night of good times and the unexpected! Race starts from 9pm and is open to all young and old so take a shot cause you might be the first local sprinter to bag it all with cold hard cash!

The Killer Gerbil was invited by sports giant adidas Singapore for a graffiti piece alongside local heroes Antz, Clog02 & Zero for adidas all24, an epic 24 hours celebration of style, street and sports event held at *Scape.

Each artists took a 4 hours shift starting from 10pm all the way till the next day at 2pm to complete the collab freestyle piece.

The legendary graffiti duo from 123KLAN was in town recently to promote their latest collab with an upcoming Singaporean sneaker label BRONX here in Singapore.

Local heroes Clog02, Zero and yours truly were invited to paint alongside the legends at the official launch that took place at Limited Edition store.

"FACE OFF is Asia first street artist tournament. War breaks out on March 30th with round 1 at The Hall, Old School, Mt Sophia. The program is a sudden death tournament where 2 street artists battle it out live. The tournament kicks off with a double header: The Killer Gerbil & TraseOne will do a demonstration alongside the competiters zero3sixtyfive and Addica (addicted to ink cans.)

The artists have 90 minutes to draw or paint in black on white an image that will be judged by the crowd. Invited Judges, The Killer Gerbil & TraseOne will give the critic’s choice and the crowd will vote with their feet on the night for the winner.

The rules are simple: free form, black on white, single medium, 8ft x 8ft boards, no extra time, one brush or marker. Winner takes all.

2010 has definitely been an awesome year for The Killer Gerbil with many great working opportunities I could only imagined before while accomplishing the bucket list for the year. Not to mention the great travel opportunities for that one in the lifetime experiences with many new and old friends met along the way that has definitely moulded me not just as a better artist but also a better human being in existence.

The Killer Gerbil was invited by Singapore Kindness Movement and Play Imaginative to be part of Project Singa 2010: Kindness In The Lion City, a project aims to bring out considerate social behaviour in Singaporeans through a common language – art where selected local artists worked on custom vinyl blanks of the ever well known Singa The Courtesy Lion mascot.

There were also design competitions for both students and public with prizes includes production of winning entries apart from cash money.

Project Singa showcase is now on from 12th - 15th November happening at Funan DigitaLife Mall so do drop by to check out all the local goodies under one roof.

What up my good people sorry I left this space with the lack of updates. Recently I just quit my day job to seek happiness and was picking up the pieces left behind and shits never get busier than this. My day to day has been filled with schedules of deadlines and meetings but that doesn't stop me from routine rides with my good mates from local outfit Crank Arm Steady who were also responsible behind last year's Tour Of Singapore (150km around Singapore coast line on fixed gear).

Just like any other breakfast ride before work resume, yesterday I decided to feed my random bombing need somewhere long forgotten. With no sketch and leftover cans in hand, I present you this quick clip in tune for this year's Tour Of Singapore which will be happening on 11 December 2010. EID MUBARAK

This year I had the opportunity to celebrate Eid in the suburbs of Malacca, Malaysia for the first time. The once Portugese colonized in the 1500s, Malacca is Malaysia's third smallest state which is 3 hours drive from Singapore and is popular for its Peranakan culture and its historical attractions.

I put up at a family's place in Selandar upon arrival, a small village town surrounded with lush greenaries and kampung styled houses all decorated with festive ornaments and lightings in tuned for Eid.

We started the first morning of Eid by heading to the local mosque with everyone in sight young and old, all dressed up in colourful baju kurungs to perform Eid prayer. Once done, we head back to the elders' to seek forgiveness among all and later proceed to enjoy the local festive delicacies before heading out for relatives visiting. For once in life, I felt blessed and at peace with no electronic and communication gadgets except my camera for documentation purposes and this is definitely how simple life should be; enjoying the untouched scenaries and sincere human interactions.

Earlier this year local fashion magazine Nuyou approached and invited The Killer Gerbil to create a visual inspired artwork of fashion label Gucci's latest bag product which was designed by Gucci's creative director Frida Giannini.

The March edition Nuyou magazine feature was to hype up Gucci's take on charity in which 100% sales proceed from the bag will go entirely to a children charity organization.

Thank you Terence Lee from Nuyou magazine for the feature and the hassle to send the back issue copy. Better late than never!

SPEAK GOOD ENGLISH LAH!

Since year 2000, our sunny Singapore has adapted a nationwide Speak Good English Movement to encourage Singaporeans to speak grammatically correct English. Moving on to this year's campaign which tagline is "Get It Right!", the National Library Board has commissioned selected few local artists and designers including yours truly to design an artwork cover which will be printed on blank notebooks as part of the activist toolkit which also include sticky notes and stickers among others to be given out to the public.

This year's campaign were officialized by the Guest-of-Honour Dr Vivian Balakrishnan (Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports) earlier today whom later presented signed artwork posters to individual artists and designers as a token of appreciation on stage.

Nigo who started his urban clothing line way back in 1993 had seen massive success ever since from sold out seasonal collections to collabs with big international names among many successful others.

My long time buddy and multi-talent Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) based hiphop emcee Altimet was in town over the past weekend to perform at the Esplanade along with the region's biggest hiphop heavyweights.

Known for his invincibility in rhymes battles and freestyling, Altimet has won several awards with his radio hits and always stayed fresh experimenting with different music genres from drum & bass to ska and everything else in between. The never-not-working Altimet is also a dj, co-founder of Mixology DJ Academy, manager at Powder Records and tv host. In short, dude's huge back home.

Long time friends and local hiphop finest THECRAZY88 had finally released their long awaited self titled EP on what's better date than August 8th (8/8) and I couldn't be more excited to be supporting their cause and love for pushing local hiphop scene.

Made up of the crazy talented duo Ishmael Benjamin & Yushilmi Saini aka Shino, they are part of Singapore independent hiphop collective XS1 which had been around more than a decade always striving while keeping it real locally without all those bling bling, hoes and gun tooting bullshit.

Produced by the beat masters behind XS1 & BrandNewFeeling, THECRAZY88 8 tracks EP can be downloaded here for free with tons of name drops you be familiar with so do spread the love around cause that's the least you can do for the time and mad effort the guys had given in this self funded project and to many more.

The event which was held earlier today at Mandarin Gallery saw crowds doing their bit for charity while kicking off under the sun with live music and dance performances apart from the visual candies.

Old time friend also international rap superstar Lupe Fiasco who was in town for SINGfest (South East Asia's Premier LIVE Music Event) along with the good people from homegrown outfit FALSE dropped by and paid The Killer Gerbil a surprise visit at Sup Clothing store in Haji Lane despite the bad weather here to catch up over lost times.

Lupe and I first met in 2005 at IdN Conference here in Singapore at the time he was building his career in the music industry and since then has gone successfully huge through his love and passion for hip-hop with various music award title under his belt.

Lupe Fiasco will be performing at SINGfest on 4th of August happening at Fort Canning Park along other international fames like Kanye West, Katy Perry and Smashing Pumpkins among others.

It was definitely nice to catch up again with the ever so humble and talented Lupe and we can only wish for more success for his career in time to come.

Last Saturday witnessed The Killer Gerbil official clothing line release party at Sup Clothing store with people young and old streaming in store despite the drizzle with some even queued before the store opens just to be the early birds of the pack. Attendees were treated to an in-store art installation which was a re-creation of my actual workstation made up of intimate and personal belongings, sketches and what nots.

Halfway throughout the night, we decided to be generous and held a random competition which 5 brave volunteers had to chomped a bag of popcorns to victory with winner happened to be our boy Mingzhi walking away with a Killer Gerbil tshirt of his choice.

The Killer Gerbil would like to personally thank everyone who made their way down to show their love and support, your presence are much appreciated. On my last visit to Europe, I took the opportunity to catch up with my cousin Hasan who's living and working in The Netherlands for over 6 years and spent a good 7 days with his family, doing the Dutch thing. Hasan is a tech nerd, if theres a term for that, always with the latest electronic gadgets and shits for personal and work purposes and the man behind production house rastAsia who did my European travel documentation and interview on video.

Here he is repping a custom tee I did while I was there and was probably drunk drawing since I vaguely remember doing it!

Next we have my lovely nieces Zahara and Leia in their newly converted games room which murals I did on the walls came as a surprise for the girls who were in school when painting was in progress.

They were so proud of the artwork, I remembered them staying in the room, wide-eyed the whole time after I presented them the new look.

I first met Hadi who hailed from Bandung, Indonesia 2006 during an event there and we been good friends if not family ever since. Hadi is an architect and travels frequently for work and we never fail to meet up whenever he is in Singapore.

Hadi is now currently in Bahrain for a project he's working on and here he is representing a special 1 of 2 custom spray paint on t-shirt I did for him from 2006 and still rocking it.

"Architecture Saves Us : Parahyangan Architecture Parade" is an event held by the architectural students of Parahyangan Catholic University in creating awareness on everyday architecture through photography showcases and talks with live music acts, graffiti and fixed gear freestyling tricks session for its closing ceremonial night.

The current local arts and music scenes are definitely progressing from time to time and its really good to know the people around me are pushing the envelopes harder than before to step up their game.

I knew of a Kevin Lester or he's formally known as Switch from the band "Bonafide Vintage Flav'r" who is a rap figure in the local hip hop scene from way back in the day. BVF had impressive shits with hit songs that ride the local air waves and nominated best local band and song in between.

Fast forward 8 years later and disbanded, Kevin now took on his solo act full time creating good music just like how its supposed to be. Kevin just recently completed a video for his latest track "Rockstar" backed by the geniuses behind Bedsty Music. This is one video you don't fucking want to miss knowing it is done right here in the Lion City with cameos by local head honchos with no pretentious shit whatsoever because this is where its at!

You read about my Europe trip from last month and while I was there, my buddy rastAsia from The Netherlands actually took his precious time out to do an unofficial random interview of my take and thoughts on my trip to the old world which filming took place at Arc de Triomphe in Paris and Marriott Hotel in Amsterdam.

SUP 2ND YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Another year has passsed and this year Singapore's very own Sup Clothing has reached their second year in existence as one of the local finest producing mad stuffs time after time.

For this year Sup Clothing yet again collaborated with The Killer Gerbil to produce three anniversary tshirts which illustrations are hand drawn by yours truly.

The "2nd Year Annivesary Crest" tshirt takes inspiration from soccer jerseys with two green stars symbolizing two years and the handshake signifying strength regardless of race.

The "Facade" tshirt pays homage to the store, pretty much summarizing what the store means to many as a venue to drink at, hang out, make friends, ride, barbeques and having good times.

The Killer Gerbil was in France and The Netherlands travelling halfway across the globe for 2 weeks doing the old world in the cold for a getaway to get inspired while making new friends and meeting old buddies.

QUINTIN "HATS OFF" RECAP

The Killer Gerbil was invited to custom a blank Quintin cap for a group show in Tokyo, Japan from last month's post alongside many other huge international artists. The event was a success with DJs on set and live graffiti on the opening night that was held at Shibuya Club Axxcis.

Special shout out to Andrew Wu of Evolution Holdings for the opportunity to represent Singapore and The Royal Breed for the coverage on the opening night!

TOUR OF SINGAPORE 2009

Fixed gear biking culture has been growing tremendously huge over the past 5 years and its already catching up in our tiny humid island like a swine flu here in Singapore for the past year or so.

Last week the good people from Sup Clothing and one of Singapore's fixed gear community Crank Arm Steady held the first Tour Of Singapore on fixed gear, 120km around Singapore coastline with over 50 participants from all walks of life for the one day tour and its definitely nice to meet new and old fellow cyclists.

The tour took us about 10 hours to complete with a few pitstops in between and congrats to the 90% (including our only female rider) that survived the ordeal, this tour would never happen without you, your motivation and strength.

To those who didn't, you know you're the weakest link. Go sell your bike and pick up gardening or something less vigorous.

~~Just kidding!~~ Practice harder for next year and stop whining.
